A number of businesses in Downtown Markham have re-opened as the province of Ontario allows more retail stores to open amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under Stage 1 of the province’s re-opening plan, retail stores with street-front entrances have been permitted to open as long as they are able to maintain health and safety requirements like physical distancing and thorough disinfectant cleaning.
The pandemic and subsequent lockdown of Ontario businesses has been very difficult on many small business owners and operators, who have had to reduce staff and services in order to make ends meet.
Anyone wishing to visit one of the Downtown Markham shops should contact them by phone in advance to confirm store hours and any health restrictions that may impact a visit. All customers should follow established physical distancing and hand-cleaning protocols when visiting a store.
It’s also important to note that not every business in Downtown Markham has re-opened.
Stores without street-front entrances – including those within The Origin – have not been permitted to open, and any businesses that involve close contact between client and provider – including hair and beauty salons – will also remain closed.
Cineplex Theatres and GoodLife Fitness have also not been given the green light to re-open, and all restaurants and coffee shops in the community can still only provide take out or delivery of menu items – eat-in options are not permitted.
Additional service industries and retail workplaces are expected to open under Stage 2 of the province’s re-opening plan. Currently there is no proposed date for implementation of Stage 2.
Downtown Markham Events
A number of summer events planned for Downtown Markham for the summer of 2020 have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and have been postponed and likely cancelled until the province allows large gatherings. These include:
- Markham Ribfest
- DTM Music Festival & Summer Jam
- DTM Craft Beer and Food Festival
- NBA/NHL viewing parties in Origin Square
The Pride of Canada Carousel will remain closed until at least Stage 2 of the province’s re-opening plan, and we are currently not accepting any event bookings for the carousel.
Downtown Markham Presentation Centre
The DTM Presentation Centre at 162 Enterprise Blvd. will remain closed but staff are available to existing and potential high rise purchasers by appointment or email only. Please call 905-948-9900 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment.
Without question, the current global pandemic has changed the definition of “business as usual.” However, businesses in Downtown Markham are working hard to ensure you feel safe and confident in visiting and patronizing any of their shops and services through the summer of 2020.
