Downtown Markham is inviting you to Party in the Square on New Year’s Eve with live music and fireworks as we ring in 2020!

Origin Square – at 169 Enterprise Blvd. in Downtown Markham – will host our annual New Year’s party on Dec. 31 from 9 p.m. to after midnight with music from Kiana Persad and Mad Madame Mim, followed by a countdown from Markham Town Crier John Webster and a spectacular fireworks show.

“People love to join together with their neighbours on New Year’s Eve,” says Christina Butterfield, who oversees communications in Downtown Markham. “It’s a great opportunity to enjoy music and fireworks with friends, to make new friends in the community and to celebrate all we have in Downtown Markham as we look forward to bigger and better things in 2020.

“You can plan a dinner of one of our many excellent restaurants and then join us in the Square to ring in the New Year!”

The festivities kick off at 9 p.m. with a set from multi-talented musician and vocalist Kiana Persad and her band. Just 18 years old, Kiana plays piano, guitar, bass, drums and ukulele, plus handles lead vocals for a variety of covers and original songs.

Then from 10 p.m. until just before midnight, Origin Square will transform into a dance party with Mad Madame Mim, one of the most adventurous and imaginative bands on the Toronto music scene, with their outlandish costumes, theatrical storytelling and world rock infused with rhythmic upbeat tempos that are sure to get everyone dancing.

Markham’s acclaimed Town Crier, John Webster, will then lead the crowd with a countdown to midnight, followed by an unforgettable fireworks show lighting up the sky above the Square.

“New Year’s Eve promises to be an exciting event in the Square,” Butterfield says. “This year’s celebration really tops what we’ve done in the past and I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the party as we ring in 2020.”

There’s no admission to join the festivities – but be sure to dress appropriately for the weather!

PARTY IN THE SQUARE: Performer Bios

	KIANA PERSAD & BAND – 9-9:45pm Kiana Persad is a singer, songwriter and musician. Starting with piano at the age of 4 and guitar at the age of 7. Now at the age of 18 she plays piano, guitar, bass, drums, ukulele and sings. Kiana plays in 2 bands and performs solo acts as well. She has been performing for many years and continues to do so with a repertoire of covers and over 100 original songs.
	MAD MADAME MIM – 10-11:45pm Born from the creative minds of Joanna Glezakos lead vocals, Simon Miminis on drums, Terry Russell on bass and Jason Edward Allen on lead guitar collectively bring to life an ensemble of theatrical world rock infused with rhythmic upbeat tempos that is sure to get you dancing. Mad Madame Mim’s 2019 debut performance has had a ripple effect through the Toronto music scene and Mad Madame Mim has been taking Toronto night clubs by storm with the crowds dancing all night long.
	JOHN WEBSTER: MARKHAM TOWN CRIER – Intros & Countdown John is a third-generation resident of Markham, and was proclaimed as The Official Town Crier for The City of Markham by Town Council in 1987. He is very visible throughout the town, conducting historic walks and reading proclamations at official functions. John performs at over 200 events per year and sits on many boards of community clubs and festivals.
